Located in the historic centre of Abingdon, the County Hall houses the town's museum. Visitors will find information, displays and interactives portraying the town's long history, as well as a locally discovered Ichthyosaur and other fossils. Completed in 1682 by Christopher Kempster, the County Hall is a classical civic hall with a pillared arcade in front. In the past it was the venue for the quarterly assize court sessions, balls, concerts and theatrical performances, and markets were held in the arcade. The museum collection was first established in 1920 as a natural history collection, and since then it has grown into a comprehensive collection of objects, art and archaeology. The displays tell the story of Abingdon over thousands of years. You will find Stone Age tools, Roman shoes, Saxon jewellery, pieces from the Medieval Abbey, objects representing public institutions like the fire brigade, the police and the workhouse, and many things from people's working lives all the way through to an actual MGB Roadster, built at Abingdon's MG factory.
