Bronze Bowl

What is it?

This bronze bowl from Roman times is one of two that were excavated at a Roman cemetery near Sutton Courtney. This is a great example of Roman metalworking. At that time, this bowl would have been used to hold food and possibly used as storage for smaller things such as jewelry or kitchenware. Due to the area it was found, it can be suggested that it was buried with someone who had passed away either for them or the gods. It is known that Romans believed that the individual soul survived death and went to great lengths to keep their loves ones comfortable and happy in their graves. Because of this, when someone was buried, they would often be sent off with material goods such as clothing, perfume, personal treasures and even food, drink and blood. It could be assumed that the bowl found held some of these items, more likely food than anything else, or was a treasured possession by the deceased. It could also be that this bowl held offerings or sacrificia. These were given likely to appease the gods and keep you in their favour, as was always done on important occasions such as a burial but also, once again, to keep the gone safe and happy after death.
